A technical route requiring specialist skills.

Grippy footwear, drinking water, a snack and an offline track. The final scramble requires confident movement using your hands. Skip it when the rock is wet.

Birtvisi: from wooded passages to open rock.

Parking and the plan

Birtvisi is in Kvemo Kartli, near the village of Tbisi. From Tbilisi, head towards Tetritskaro via Asureti, then turn towards Tbisi. Leave the car at the main parking area before the walking approach. The first photo shows the clearing with a car and an information board; open the location pin beneath it for the exact spot. A four-wheel-drive vehicle can continue a little farther along the dirt road if conditions allow.

The main parking area. The location pin below the photo marks where to leave the car.

Allow 3–5 hours for the walk, including stops. The supplied GPX covers about 6.9 km and the recording lasted 3 hours 36 minutes. It starts a little beyond the main parking area, so the short walk from the car and back is additional. The route leads through woodland and rock passages to the ruins and the upper viewpoint, then returns along the same trail. There is no need to arrange a car pickup at another village.

Expect climbs and descents, with hands needed on the final scramble. The rope section is described in chapter three. Wear footwear with a good grip, carry drinking water for the whole outing and a snack, and save the track offline. If the wet rock or exposure feels beyond your comfort level, skip the upper scramble and turn back at the ruins.
